EPA with EU

Tariffs on European cheese imposed by Japan in the Japan-Europe EPA negotiations are the main focus. How are Japan and Europe arguing?

Why does the EU place importance on cheese?

It is said that France has over 1,000 cheeses, the EU production is 50% of the world market share. In 2015, the EU ceased production adjustment of raw milk to make cheese the mainstay export. However, the relationship with Russia, which is a powerful export destination for problems surrounding Ukraine, worsened. Milk is oversupplied, and dairymen have gone on to expand the export destination to the EU.

Domestic consumption of cheese in Japan is also growing. If EU cheese flows in there, it will be kicked out. Dairy officials are strongly aware of European dairy products.

Regarding purchasing plays that shake the retail industry across the country, John McKee, Chief Executive Officer of Whole Foods, explained at the beginning of the meeting at the meeting for employees at the beginning.

FTA&EPA

FTA is an abbreviation for Free Trade Agreement. In Japan, free trade agreement aims to promote free trade in goods and services by eliminating tariffs between the country and the country (or region).

EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement), based on this FTA, not only eliminates tariffs but also strengthens economic partnership in various fields including protection of intellectual property and development of investment rules.
