FTA&EPA

FTA is an abbreviation for Free Trade Agreement. In Japan, free trade agreement aims to promote free trade in goods and services by eliminating tariffs between the country and the country (or region).

EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement), based on this FTA, not only eliminates tariffs but also strengthens economic partnership in various fields including protection of intellectual property and development of investment rules.

C / O: Certificate of Origin

In principle, in order to receive preferential tariffs, "C / O: Certificate of Origin" issued in the exporting country is required.

Generally, the "Certificate of Origin" is sent from the exporter together with the shipping document by e-mail etc. However, it often arrives later than the shipping document.
(Normally, "Certificate of origin" needs to be applied to the Chamber of Commerce after B / L is issued.)

Also, in order to receive the preferential tariff, "original certificate of origin" is required to submit the original.

There are places where the contents of "Certificate of Origin" must be consistent with the content of B / L or invoice, and if there is a mistake, the preference tariff is not applicable.

For that reason, importers should send a scan of "Certificate of Origin" by e-mail before asking them to send the original, and check with the contents of the contents beforehand, etc., we will look at the customs clearance smoothly.

GSP: Generalized System of Preferences

Although it seems like a profitable system that does not pay tariffs from the importer side, with regard to certain imported goods originating in developing countries or regions, it is established for the purpose of promoting imports from these countries (or regions) and supporting economic development by setting a lower tax rate or tax free (tariff 0 yen) than the general tariff rate.

By the way, the country that is subject to this preference tariff is called "preferential beneficiary country (or region)" and as of March 2016, 137 countries and seven areas are the subjects.
